Kentucky Honor Flight
Challenge coins (as the story goes) were created during WWI and have resonated with military members since then. Their purpose is to instill military pride, create unit cohesiveness and commemorate official visits by top brass. Honor Flight flies veterans to Washington, DC to see the war memorials as a way of honoring them and thanking them for their service. Each Honor Flight hub creates its own custom challenge coins to present to these veterans as a memento of the flight and a tangible thank you for their service. Kentucky's Honor Flight coin shows a flying thoroughbred, appropriate for the state known for racing, bluegrass and horses.
